Pumpkin seed oilCucurbita pepo seed oil

Moderate evidenceReviewed September 19, 2026

A widely used, well-tolerated oil with a small number of decent trials showing modest improvements in urinary symptom scores and nighttime urination. Often mentioned on forums as the supplement men noticed something from.

Dose used in trials
320 to 1,000 mg/day of seed oil extract, taken with meals
Time to effect
12 weeks in the shorter trial; benefits grew over 12 months in the longer one

What the evidence says

A 2009 Korean trial (n=47, 320 mg/day for 12 months) found improved symptom scores and flow versus placebo. A 2019 German trial (n=60, 500 mg/day for 12 weeks) reported reduced nighttime urination. Evidence is smaller in volume than saw palmetto but more consistently positive, and the oil is also used for overactive bladder in both sexes.

What it is

Oil pressed from the seeds of Cucurbita pepo, the Styrian pumpkin. It is rich in phytosterols, including beta-sitosterol, plus zinc and vitamin E, which is probably why it overlaps with other prostate ingredients in effect.

What the trials found

The trials are small but they point the same way. Symptom scores improved, nighttime trips fell by roughly one per night on average, and flow rates rose slightly. Prostate volume did not change, which is the pattern for every herbal in this category.

It also has separate trials in overactive bladder, which matters because a lot of nighttime urination in men over 50 is bladder-driven, not prostate-driven.

Why forums like it

Pumpkin seed oil comes up repeatedly in Reddit threads about nighttime urination as the supplement people say they noticed. That is anecdote, not evidence, but it matches the trial direction and the product is cheap and safe enough that trying it for 12 weeks costs little.

  • Mild digestive upset in a minority
  • It is a fat, so it adds calories at gram-level doses

Interactions

Frequently asked questions

Can I just eat pumpkin seeds?
A handful a day is good for you but delivers far less oil than the softgel doses in trials. You would need about 30 to 50 g of seeds daily to approach them.
Oil or extract?
The trials used the oil itself or an oil extract. Choose softgels with a milligram figure of oil per capsule.
